Description

Saturday, January 14 at 2:00 PM in the Glen Ellyn History Center, 800 N. Main St., the Glen Ellyn Historical Society presents Barbara J. Barrett lecturing on Chicago’s Historic Motor Row District.  This area is home to the largest, intact, early “Motor Colony” in the United States.  Primarily located on south Michigan Avenue, it was designated a Chicago Landmark on Dec. 13, 2000 and added to the US National Register of Historic Places on Nov. 18, 2002.  At its peak, at least 116 different makes of automobiles were sold and repaired on Motor Row.  Names of the early auto companies are Ford, Buick, Hudson, Cadillac, Locomobile, Marmon, and Premier  still visible today on the building’s brick and terra cotta facades located on south Michigan Ave.  Barrett speaks about the early development of the American automobile industry, the top flight architects who designed the elaborate automobile showrooms on Motor Row, several of the 116 automobile companies located there, and the automobiles that would be for sale in these showrooms.  Refreshments served. Admission $5 at the door. Call 630-469-1867 and check www.gehs.org.
