All ages. As the oak trees drop their acorns, many animals use these brown little nuggets for nourishing food and as shelter. Those that are not eaten or bored into, may actually sprout and begin their lives as oak seedlings. Over the last several decades, our oaks have not been regenerating due to changing habitats and the invasion of shade-creating trees like honeysuckle, buckthorn and maple. An easy way to help our oaks is to distribute their acorns in suitable areas where they have been historically lost. Lake Ellyn Park has more oak trees than any other of our local parks. Join us to gather some acorns that will be spread into natural areas. Prizes will be awarded for whoever can collect the most nuts, the best estimator of how many are in a jar, and an acorn/oak species identifying challenge.
