The Glen Ellyn Public Works Department is a vital organization for a community of roughly 29,000 residents in the western suburbs of Chicago. We are recruiting for an employee in the Utilities Division, which is responsible for maintaining the Village’s drinking water, sanitary, and storm sewer systems.
This could be an entry-level opportunity for a Maintenance Worker I (MWI) or, for the right candidate with relevant experience, a Maintenance Worker II (MWII) position. This role performs a variety of tasks related to the construction, maintenance, and repair of public infrastructure, along with playing an integral role in snow and ice control operations. Position is required to respond to emergencies during regular and after hours, on evenings, weekends, and holidays. Other related duties as assigned. Position reports directly to the Division’s Crew Leader.
Applicants must possess a high school diploma or equivalent, possession of a college degree or advanced training is preferred.
The duties of this job include physical activities such as stooping, kneeling, standing, reaching, climbing, walking, lifting and/or moving (up to 75 pounds), grasping, pulling/pushing, twisting, talking, hearing/listening, seeing/observing, occasional typing, and repetitive motions. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close, distance and peripheral vision; depth perception; and the ability to adjust focus.
Employee occasionally works around vibrations and noise, moving mechanical parts, confined spaces and underground trenches, heights, and is exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and extreme outdoor temperatures. Work environment includes primarily outdoor work in various types of weather conditions, with some indoor work as well.
The general work schedule is Monday-Friday, 7:00 am to 3:30 pm. Must be able to respond to after-hours call-backs and be prepared for and confront emergency conditions as necessary.
This is a full-time, non-exempt (overtime eligible) position with full benefits and participation in the Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund (IMRF), a defined benefit retirement plan. The hourly pay range for a MWI is $26.71- $37.40 and for a MWII $28.06 - $39.28, actual starting pay to commensurate with experience.
